Background
About the song
«Un clásico» is a song by the Spanish singer Ana Mena, released as a single on 20 January 2023. It is the Spanish-language version of «Superclassico», a 2020 hit by the Italian rapper Ernia, and it became the third single from Mena’s second studio album, «Bellodrama», which came out on 24 March 2023 on Sony Music Spain. The recording lasts two minutes and fifty-two seconds and keeps the production of the original, signed by the Italian duo Zef and Marz.
Ana Mena was born in Estepona, on the Costa del Sol, in February 1997. She started as a child actress (one of her first roles was in the television film «Marisol, la película», in 2009) and in 2010 she won a Disney talent contest linked to «Camp Rock 2». Her singing career took off in 2016, but the real turning point came in Italy: in 2018 she recorded «D’estate non vale» with the rapper Fred De Palma, the first of several summer hits in Italian, and in 2022 she competed at the Sanremo Festival with «Duecentomila ore». «Un clásico» is part of that two-way traffic between Spain and Italy that defines her music.
The original, «Superclassico», was written by Ernia (whose real name is Matteo Professione) with Alessandro Pulga and Stefano Tognini. According to the Italian and English Wikipedia, it was released on 19 June 2020 as the first single from his album «Gemelli» and became his first number one in Italy. Its title refers to the Superclásico, the famous Buenos Aires football rivalry between Boca Juniors and River Plate. For the Spanish version the lyrics were not simply translated: they were adapted by Mena herself together with José Luis de la Peña Mira, Bruno Nicolás Fernández and David Augustave, and the story is now told from a woman’s point of view.
In the song a young woman knows that people describe her as someone who loves going out and cannot be trusted, and she suspects that the man she likes has heard the same warnings, even from his own family. Even so, he writes to her, and she realises that she thinks about him too. Every time they meet by chance her heart races, and the tension between them is compared to a big football match between eternal rivals. In Spain «el clásico» is the name of the game between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, so the image works perfectly for a Spanish audience. In the last part she looks ahead with irony: one day they will get bored, go their separate ways and forget each other, and each of them will be with somebody else.
