Dutch sits close enough to English that a speaker recognises hundreds of words on sight — water, hand, winter, storm — and far enough away that word order and the guttural g have to be learned properly rather than guessed. Songs help with the half that reading never fixes: how the language actually runs when nobody is slowing it down for a learner.
