Background
About the song
«Brindis» («Toast») is a song by the Argentine folk singer Soledad Pastorutti, known simply as Soledad or, to her fans, «La Sole». It was released in 2005 on «Diez años de Soledad», the double album with which she celebrated her first ten years on stage. The song was written especially for her by Afo Verde, who also produced the album and who later became one of the most influential executives in Latin music as the head of Sony Music for Latin America.
Soledad was born on 12 October 1980 in Arequito, a small town in the province of Santa Fe, and she still lives there with her family. Her start is one of the best-known stories in Argentine music. On 26 January 1996, at the age of fifteen, she sang at the Cosquín Festival, the great yearly gathering of Argentine folklore, and she was hailed as the revelation of that edition, winning the Cosquín de Oro award. Her habit of twirling a poncho over her head while she sang became her trademark, and her first album, «Poncho al viento» (1996), sold more than 800,000 copies according to Wikipedia. She brought a young audience to a genre that many people associated with their grandparents.
«Diez años de Soledad» is a portrait of that first decade. According to the Spanish-language Wikipedia, the first disc contains eleven studio recordings, while the second one was recorded live during a television special for the Telefe channel, in front of an audience of fans. «Brindis» was one of the new songs of the project and, over the years, it has become one of the central pieces of her repertoire and one of the songs the public expects at every concert.
The song is a celebration told in the first person. The singer raises a glass to herself and looks back at the road she has travelled: the long crossings, the shortcuts she refused to take, the battles that left marks on her and the failures she had to swallow. She also counts the price of a life on tour, the parties she missed, the friends she could not see and the Sundays spent far from home, as well as the betrayals, the blows and the moments of anger. Yet the balance is a happy one. Thanks to the affection of the people who looked after her, she still trusts others, and every time she seems to fall she gets up again. The chorus is a toast to the days that are still ahead and a promise to keep singing to the very end. In the last section, on lonely nights when memories hurt, she holds on to her guitar and turns her songs into prayers.
