Background
About the song
«Pega ou Larga» («Take It or Leave It») is a 2026 single by Chico da Tina, the rapper and concertina player from Viana do Castelo, in the Minho region of northern Portugal. The official video was published on YouTube on 7 August 2026, and its title announces the song as «brega-tuga». Brega is a Brazilian style of popular romantic music, sentimental and a little over the top, and «tuga» is the colloquial word the Portuguese use for themselves, so the label promises a Portuguese answer to a Brazilian genre. As usual with Chico da Tina, the joke and the music arrive together: the track keeps the swing of a dance song while the concertina, the button accordion of Minho folk festivals, carries the melody.
The credits in the video description show how much of a team effort the song is. Chico da Tina wrote the lyrics and composed the music together with José C. Monteiro, Henrique Carvalhal, António Vital Carvalhal and the concertina player Amigo Simão. The production is by José C. Monteiro and GOIAS, the mix and master by André Tavares, and the live band in the video includes guitar, drums, keyboards and three concertinas. The video, which the credits call a «teledisco», was made by Grain and directed by ARV. Even the credits are part of the humour: alongside the real crew they list invented jobs, such as an «intimacy assistant» and an assistant to that assistant. Among the special thanks is the town council of Ponte de Lima, another Minho town a short drive from Viana do Castelo.
Chico da Tina is the stage name of a musician called Francisco. According to the newspaper Observador, the name plays on the word «concertina»: «Tina» is a nickname for the instrument he carries everywhere, a Hohner concertina that, as he told the newspaper Público in 2019, he inherited from his father. He describes his music as «trap minhoto», the trap of Minho: the hard beats and boasting of American trap music, translated into the accent, the villages, the pilgrimages and the customs of the north-west of Portugal. Critics often point out the meta-ironic tone of his work, which celebrates and mocks rural Minho at the same time.
His rise was quick. In July 2019 he won the first edition of the Prémio MIMO de Música, an online vote organised by the MIMO festival in Amarante; the magazine Sábado reported more than ten thousand votes and about 150 competing projects. The same year he released the EP «Trapalhadas», and he later published the albums «Minho Trapstar» and «E Agora Como É Que É?», the second of them in November 2021. Observador reported that his singles «Resort» and «Ronaldo» had been certified platinum. Songs such as «Deitei Tarde Acordei Late» and «VianaViceCity» made him a regular name on festival posters, and he has played large summer events in Portugal. A fan video shows him performing «Pega ou Larga» at Braga Summer End in 2026.
