Background
About the song
«Ora che non ho più te», Italian for "now that I don't have you any more", is a single by the Bolognese singer-songwriter Cesare Cremonini. Universal Music Italy and EMI released it on 24 September 2024, right after Cremonini announced it together with his 2025 stadium tour, and it opened the way to «Alaska Baby», his eighth studio album, which followed on 29 November 2024. Cremonini wrote the song with Davide Petrella, the songwriter who also records under the name Tropico, and produced it together with Alessio Natalizia and Alessandro De Crescenzo. It lasts five minutes and three seconds, an unusual length for a lead single at a time when most streaming hits are kept as short as possible.
The release ended a break of about two years. His previous album, «La ragazza del futuro», had come out in 2022, and in the meantime Cremonini had only appeared as a guest on «Fantasie», a 2023 track by Tropico. When he presented the new single he explained that he had chosen it to open the project because it marked a turning point both in the way his music was produced and in his private life. He talked about the need to let things go at the right moment and described a love that has ended as part of a new life that has to be faced. He also said he wanted to go back to a more direct and honest way of speaking about his own experiences, less hidden behind metaphors, and that this was a song meant to be sung, shouted and danced to.
The lyric is a night-time monologue addressed to a former partner. The narrator admits that since the relationship ended he never really manages to rest, and that the other person no longer seems to notice him or to believe what he says. He pictures himself racing along a motorway at a reckless speed, still looking for her, like a lonely soul that has lost any sense of direction. In the chorus he imagines switching off every light in town so that the sky above can shine, and he asks for a final dance even though the music is already over.
The second half is about avoidance and acceptance. He now goes only to places she has never visited, because he is afraid of bumping into her and having to exchange an ordinary greeting as if nothing had happened between them. Time slips away as quickly as a passing cloud, and an old photograph seems to grow sharper just as the person in it moves further away. In the closing image she becomes something small resting in his hands that spreads its wings and flies off: she is free, and he understands that letting her go is the only way forward for both of them.
