Background
About the song
«Great Expectation» is a pop ballad by the British singer-songwriter Sienna Spiro. It came out on 3 July 2026 through Capitol Records, on the same day as her debut studio album, «Visitor», where it is the third track. According to Wikipedia, it runs for two minutes and fifty-three seconds, it was written by Spiro together with Omer Fedi and Michael Pollack, and it was produced by Fedi. It was later sent to pop radio in the United States, where it began its promotion at the end of September 2026.
Sienna Spiro was born in London in 2005 and was twenty when the song reached the top of the British chart. Like many singers of her generation, she first found an audience on TikTok, where from 2021 she shared short videos of herself singing covers and her own songs. She released her first single in 2024 and a debut EP, «Sink Now, Swim Later», in 2025. Her real breakthrough came in the autumn of 2025 with «Die on This Hill», a dramatic piano song that reached number nine in the United Kingdom and made her deep, powerful voice familiar far beyond social media.
The idea behind «Great Expectation» comes from a real episode. As the song's English Wikipedia article summarises her explanations, Spiro was living in New York and waiting for someone who kept promising to come and see her but never did. Every morning she pictured him standing outside her flat; when he did not appear, she walked along the street imagining what their meeting could have been like. The song turns that daydream into music. It describes the perfect version of the encounter, and then admits that the version in her imagination is more satisfying than the real person.
That is the key to the title. The narrator does not celebrate the man himself but the hope she has built around him. The expectation becomes a kind of shelter: if reality keeps disappointing her, she can at least hold on to the picture in her head. Listeners who know English literature may also hear an echo of Charles Dickens's novel «Great Expectations», another story about hopes that do not match reality, although Spiro has not presented the song as a reference to the book.
The lyrics move between two worlds. In the verses, the singer describes tender scenes that only happen in her mind, and then reminds herself that real life is different: messages go unanswered and the other person only appears when he wants something. In the chorus she explains that singing is how she proves to herself that she is still alive, and that she has already cried as much as she possibly could. She wonders whether happiness is only an illusion, and decides that, if the real man cannot give her what she wants, the idea of him will have to be enough.
