Background
About the song
«Per due come noi» ("For two like us") is a 2024 duet by the Genoese singer-songwriter Olly and the singer Angelina Mango, produced by Juli, the young producer from Aosta who has built Olly's sound since 2022. It was released on 6 September 2024 by Epic, a Sony Music label, as the third single from «Tutta vita», the second album that Olly and Juli made together. According to the Italian and English Wikipedia, the words were written by Federico Olivieri (Olly's real name) and Angelina Mango, while the music is credited to the two singers and to Julien Boverod, the producer's real name. The recording lasts about three and a half minutes and is usually described as a power ballad with electropop production.
The two singers presented the song live before it was even released. On 4 September 2024, two days before the single came out, they performed it together at the Arena di Verona during «Future Hits Live», a concert event held in the Roman amphitheatre. When the single arrived on streaming services, a music video directed by Simone Peluso was published on Olly's YouTube channel on the same day.
The song tells the story of a complicated relationship between two people who have known each other for a long time. In the first verse a young man explains why things went wrong: he needs to keep moving and to feel alive, while she is happy with very small gestures, such as a note left on the fridge. Now that he has gone, she feels tiny and their bed looks enormous. The chorus describes the couple as two people who love each other in a strange way and who grew up side by side. Between them, the chorus says, nobody really wins or loses; there is only one who lies and one who admits the truth, and the singers ask each other to stop pretending that nothing happened.
In the second verse the point of view changes and the woman speaks. She meets him again after some time, and he has been waiting for her among the people in a queue. He looks more grown up than before but still has the same problems with his self-esteem. They have built a life of work, a home and a shared past that they no longer seem to recognise, and she can see that he would like to apologise and start again. But she is not someone who goes back: she would rather keep walking forward, even over broken glass. When she thinks about him she smiles, because she has finally understood that she no longer needs him by her side.
