Background
About the song
«Dos hombres y un destino» («Two men and one destiny») is a Spanish pop ballad sung as a duet by David Bustamante and Àlex Casademunt, two young singers who became famous almost overnight thanks to the first edition of the television talent show «Operación Triunfo», broadcast by TVE between 2001 and 2002. The song is the tenth of the twelve tracks on «Bustamante», the debut album that David Bustamante released on 22 May 2002 on the label Vale Music. The album was recorded in Madrid that same year and produced by Miguel Gallardo. According to Spanish Wikipedia, the duet was chosen as the first single of the album, ahead of «Además de ti» and «El aire que me das». The studio version lasts about three and a half minutes.
David Bustamante was born on 25 March 1982 in San Vicente de la Barquera, a fishing town in Cantabria, in the north of Spain. Before television changed his life he worked as a bricklayer from the age of sixteen. In «Operación Triunfo» his strong voice and emotional style made him one of the favourites of the audience, and in the final, held on 11 February 2002, he finished third with 18.8 percent of the votes. That final was watched by about 12.8 million people, a record for a talent show in Spain. His first album came out only three months later.
Àlex Casademunt was born on 30 June 1981 in Vilassar de Mar, a town on the coast near Barcelona. He was also a contestant in the first edition of the show, although he left the academy before the final. Right after the programme he formed the group Fórmula Abierta with other contestants, and their album «Aún hay más» appeared in June 2002. He later released a solo album, «Inquietudes» (2003), presented the children's programme «Los Lunnis» on TVE, and acted in musicals such as «Peter Pan» and «Mamma mia!». According to English Wikipedia, it was Bustamante who asked him in 2002 to record this song with him, and the duet became one of the most successful moments of both careers.
The song tells a story of rivalry between two friends. Both men are in love with the same young woman, and each of them is convinced that she really prefers him. The first voice describes her as the girl he had always dreamed of, his first great love and a gift that arrived just when he no longer expected to fall in love again; she is like the sun at the start of a new day. The second voice answers with his own arguments: when she is with him she feels like a girl again, he gives her everything he has, and he knows how to understand her. Every kiss, he says, tastes sweet. The woman is a friend of both, and the two men admit that the three of them are playing a game of love.
