Background
About the song
The Kolors spent almost a decade as a guitar band before the song that would define them. Formed in Naples around the brothers Antonio and Alessandro Fiordispino with bassist Daniele Mona, they won the talent show Amici in 2015 and built a following on indie-rock records.
Italodisco, released on 5 May 2023, was a deliberate turn: instead of guitars, a synthesiser line and a kick drum landing on every beat.
The title is not decoration. Italo disco was a real genre, made in Italy between roughly 1977 and 1988 on drum machines and vocoders.
It shaped house in Chicago and synth-pop in northern Europe, then fell out of fashion so completely that the name was almost an insult. The song picks it up without irony, naming Giorgio Moroder directly.
What it does with that inheritance is quieter than the beat suggests. Underneath the production the singer is anxious: a tattoo he no longer likes, a rising unease, a conversation that has stopped.
The chorus is not a celebration but a search — he cannot find the person he is looking for, and the only thing coming through clearly is the music in his head.
Did you know?
The English version, released on 15 September 2023, quietly removes the two references that anchor the original in Italy. Righeira and Festivalbar mean little abroad, so the English lyric drops them; Moroder survives the translation.
Festivalbar is worth knowing about. Between 1964 and 2007 it was one of the rituals of the Italian summer: a travelling music competition on television where the winner was decided partly by how often a record played on the jukeboxes of seaside bars. The name comes from exactly that — the bar was the voting booth.
The phrase «cassa dritta» is a technical term before it is a lyric: a bass drum on every beat of the bar, what English-speaking producers call four-on-the-floor. Saying a song has it is roughly like saying it has a pulse.
