Background
About the song
«Se t’innamori muori» is a song by the Italian singer Noemi, released on 12 February 2025 by Columbia Records and Sony Music Italy. It was her entry at the 75th Sanremo Festival and the first single from «Nostalgia», her seventh studio album. It runs three minutes and ten seconds. The song was written by Mahmood (Alessandro Mahmoud), Blanco (Riccardo Fabbriconi) and Michelangelo (Michele Zocca), who also produced it. Reference pages file it simply under pop: it is a slow-building ballad for piano, orchestra and a voice that is known for its rough edge.
The title means "If you fall in love, you die"; «t’» is the elided form of «ti» before a vowel. The whole song is spoken to a partner at a tired point of a long relationship. It opens late in the evening: the singer apologises for the hour and offers to come over. Both of them are worn out by the habit of dropping every difficult subject, and the question of becoming parents is one that neither finds easy to open. Before the chorus she admits that she would hold the other person so tightly that it could turn into hatred, and that walking away from each other calmly is anything but simple. The chorus then looks back at nights that cannot be erased, at smiles and tired eyes, and at the feeling that loving someone completely is a small death. One adverb, meaning "serenely", is left hanging on its own.
The second verse describes the magic wearing thin. Train journeys made to see each other are no longer a novelty, and when the pauses in a conversation grow longer, anxiety arrives. In the bridge she asks for one more exit from an argument that seemed to have no end. Somebody will have to lose, she says; accepting one another is hard when you do not know which road to choose, and admitting that two people are different is always tough. At the end she asks to be let go, if the other person already knows her worst side.
Noemi told the Italian weekly TV Sorrisi e Canzoni that Mahmood and Blanco are friends she confides in, and that this is why subjects that matter to her ended up in the text, among them motherhood and how hard it is for a woman to balance work and family. According to Wikipedia, she also described it as a song about abandon, about the moment when we throw ourselves into what we feel. For a learner of Italian it is a compact lesson in the second person singular of the present tense, in the conditional and the future, in the subjunctive after a verb of opinion, and in infinitives that carry a pronoun attached to the end.
