Background
About the song
«Como si fueras a morir mañana» («As If You Were Going to Die Tomorrow») is a song by the Spanish singer-songwriter Leiva. It is the eighth of the twelve tracks on «Nuclear», his fourth solo studio album, which came out on 22 March 2019, and it lasts almost exactly four minutes. It is a fast pop rock song built on electric guitars and a big, shouted chorus, and over the years it has become one of the most played songs of his career.
Leiva, whose real name is José Miguel Conejo Torres, was born in Madrid on 30 April 1980. In 1998 he formed the band Pereza with his friend Rubén Pozo, and from 2003 the two of them carried the group as a duo. Pereza released six albums and became one of the most popular Spanish rock bands of the 2000s, until they announced their separation in September 2011 and said goodbye with a last concert in June 2012 at the Palacio de Vistalegre in Madrid. Leiva then started a solo career with «Diciembre» (2012), followed by «Pólvora» (2014) and «Monstruos» (2016).
«Nuclear» was announced in December 2018. Its first single was «No te preocupes por mí», followed by the title track, «Lobos» and «En el espacio», and the album also includes «Godzilla», a song with Enrique Bunbury and Ximena Sariñana. The artistic concept of the record was created by Boa Mistura, the urban art collective from Madrid, and the deluxe edition added something unusual: the voice notes that Leiva had recorded on his phone, the very first sketches of the songs. The album went straight to number one in Spain.
The song is addressed to a «you». It begins with a warning that something is going to catch up with that person, and with the idea that sometimes it is deserved, although things are never as serious as they seem. Then the scene moves to a city that has fallen asleep, where only the usual crowd is still awake. The narrator feels strange inside his own body, speaks in an odd way and cannot stand the man he sees in the mirror, while the port slowly disappears from view. The only clear thing is that they all went too far without protecting themselves. The chorus answers all this with a single order: do it, act as if nothing were at stake and as if there were no tomorrow. The second verse adds a darker, very current picture: nobody is going to forgive, neither your own people nor the critics on the internet, the digital age has arrived, the game has only just started and something smells bad, as if it were about to explode.
