Background
About the song
«Angels» is a ballad by the English singer Robbie Williams. It was released as a single on 1 December 1997 and comes from «Life Thru a Lens», the first album he made on his own after leaving the boy band Take That in 1995. Those early solo years had not been easy: his first singles had done well, but critics wondered whether he could last without the group. «Angels» answered that question. It turned into his signature song, a song that, as the Official Charts Company notes, is still a fixed part of his concerts, and the record that made him one of the biggest British pop stars of the late 1990s and early 2000s.
The official credits name two writers: Robbie Williams and Guy Chambers, the keyboard player and producer who became his main partner for the next few years. According to the Official Charts Company, Chambers wrote the music and Williams wrote the words. Williams has often said that the two of them finished it in about twenty-five minutes, and Smooth Radio adds that they wrote the big chorus while sitting outside a café, looking at a water fountain. The recording was produced by Chambers together with Steve Power.
The story of the song, however, starts a little earlier and in another country. The Irish singer-songwriter Ray Heffernan says that he met Williams in a pub in Dublin in 1996 and played him an unfinished song of his own, which he had begun in Paris under the title «An Angel Instead». The two men recorded a demo that same week. Williams has confirmed that the demo existed, but he says that he and Chambers rewrote the song almost completely in London, and he has never accepted that Heffernan wrote it. Before the single came out, Heffernan sold his rights for 7,500 pounds, a figure reported by Wikipedia, Smooth Radio and Songfacts. Wikipedia also notes that he is thanked in the notes of one of the CD singles, and that in 2025 he said he was preparing a legal claim for a share of future royalties. The dispute has followed the song for almost thirty years.
What is the song about? Williams has given more than one answer. Smooth Radio quotes him saying that it was written with his aunt and uncle in mind, and also that it reflected his interest in the supernatural at the time. In a later interview he explained that it was not about one particular person but about the idea that people we love who have died come back to look after us. The Official Charts Company reports that he likes to call it a secular hymn: a song that sounds like a prayer but does not belong to any church.
